A preservation in progress
The Belva Lockwood Inn
Our grand inn boasts a rich history that stretches back to 1815. Imagine top hats and horse-drawn carriages – that’s when Charles Pumpelly first built a home on this very spot. After a comfortable stay (we like to think so!), he eventually moved on, paving the way for a more scholarly chapter. In 1863, the building transformed into The Owego Female Seminary, a prestigious boarding and day school for young women.
Enter Belva Lockwood, a woman who would shatter glass ceilings. She purchased the property in 1863 and served as the Seminary’s principal until 1865. Belva’s ambitions soared far beyond the classroom. She went on to become the first woman admitted to the Supreme Court Bar and even dared to challenge the status quo by running for President of the United States – twice!
After Belva’s pioneering spirit moved on to Washington D.C., the original structure was partially relocated within Owego. The land where you stand today witnessed the construction of a magnificent new residence in 1878 by Jefferson Dwelle. This architectural gem, considered one of the finest examples of High Victorian style in the region, became the permanent home of our grand inn.
The building’s story continues to unfold. It served as a gathering place for the Fraternal Order of Eagles and later became a private residence. Finally, in a full-circle moment, it was transformed back into a haven for travelers, welcoming guests like yourself to experience its unique charm and rich history.
Each room at the Belva Lockwood Inn has been carefully designed to reflect the rich history of the property. All suites are located on the second floor of the hotel and have a private en suite.
