A preservation in progress

The Belva Lockwood Inn

In 1815, Charles Pumpelly built a home and lived there until 1841 when he moved to his brother’s house located at the other end of Front Street in Owego.

The home was eventually converted to a boarding and day school for young ladies, The Owego Female Seminary.

In 1863 Belva Lockwood bought the property and was Principal of the Seminary until 1865. Belva sold the home and moved to Washington D.C. In 1879 she was the first woman to be admitted to the Supreme Court Bar. Belva went on to run for President of the United States in 1884 & 1888.

After Belva left, the original home was partially dismantled and moved to 188 Front Street, Owego and was used as a carriage house. In 1878, Jefferson Dwelle built this home which is considered one the finest examples of High Victorian architecture in the region.

The property later became home to the Fraternal Order of Eagles and then served as a private residence.

Each room at the Belva Lockwood Inn has been carefully designed to reflect the rich history of the property.  All adult guest suites are located on the second floor of the Inn.

Tour Our Rooms

The

The

Lovelass

Room

With a quaint Country Cottage feel, this room is full of natural light and plenty of space. Tuck your personal items away in the original built in drawers underneath the three large windows.

The

Once home to the Eagles Club Office, this room pays respect to the Eagle’s Club history. You’ll enjoy the built in dresser that still are labeled “treasurers reports” from back in the day!

The

Knickerbocker

Room

Inspired by the funky local artist, Chris Knickerbocker, this room will dazzle you with the glitter glass sculptured wall! The separate toilet room was once a janitors closet and still houses the original built-in storage cupboards!

The

Gorman

Located at the back of the house, this room once served as the Servant Quarters…but don’t let that fool you! This elegant room has the largest bathroom of all of the suites and includes an original claw foot tub! Absolutely Great Place to Stay! I had some trepidation about staying at a B&B due to past experiences. Belva Lockwood Inn changed my mind permanently!!!!!!! The lovely Inn, wonderful hosts, charming, relaxing, historical bar, scrumptious breakfast (delivered baskets a wonderful touch!) Even down to the products in the ensuite bathrooms, everything was wonderful. We rented 4 rooms (family, 4 couples) and each room was as interesting as the next. Great Job Guys!!!!!!

Where Business Meets Pleasure My boyfriend and I had a delightful stay at the Belva Lockwood Inn. The Inn exceeded our expectations in this quaint little town of Owego, NY. This Historic Early Victorian home is lovely and beautifully appointed. Brie and Matt were gracious and welcoming hosts. They were so friendly and hospitable, and could not have been more helpful with recommendations of places to eat and visit during our stay. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The complementary homemade breakfasts and desserts that Brie prepared herself were of gourmet restaurant quality. The Belva Lockwood Inn was the perfect business/pleasure get-away. Looking forward to our next stay.We highly recommend!!!

Birthday Escape What a wonderful getaway! My room was lovely and the hosts were so charming. I loved my Sunday breakfast left outside my bedroom door in a basket and the wine bar was another favorite! Enjoyed walking to town to shop, eat and stroll on the river walk. Definitely plan to come back with my daughter.😊🥰

Absolute perfection If you ever wanted to live in a real life hallmark movie, this is your place! To describe every highlight of our visit at this beautifully renovated historic home would fill a novel. The place is a perfect blend of old history and fresh updates. Vintage architecture and antique furnishings are balanced with just a touch of modern design and color (much from local artists). A Front porch rocking chair nestled in fall holiday florals and decor was the perfect spot for morning coffee with a river front view. Every detail is attended to - our stay included amazing picnic breakfasts with baked goods that rival the finest Parisian pâtisserie, fully stocked snack & beverage area, fully stocked self serve bar, plush linens, robes, etc. . The owners were perfectly attentive and provided us with rich history of the inn. They even showed us the tunnel in the basement that is linked to the Underground Railroad. Fascinating!! There is much to do around the Owego area - shops downtown are easy walking distance. Wineries, hiking and orchards and other attractions are easily drivable. But be warned that once you step foot inside the inn, you may not want to leave! Thanks, Matt & Brie for an amazing experience. You guys thought of everything!

Can I give it more than a 5???? The Belva Lockwood Inn should serve as a model for all other bed and breakfasts! Brie and Matt are gracious hosts who gave us the perfect balance of accessibility and privacy. It is hard to pinpoint what is the best thing about our stay- the lovely porches, the delicious breakfasts (with our own coffee carafes) waiting in a picnic basket by our door, the stocked bars (with adult beverages, coffee, water, soft drinks and snacks), the hospitality, the history of the home or the charming rooms. The inn's interior was reflective of the history of home without being "creepy" or "musty" and offered modern amenities like instant hot water in the shower and the perfect mattress- things that are often overlooked in historical B&Bs but make a huge difference in the quality of a stay. The inn is walking distance to adorable shops (most close at 5 pm) and is across the street from a large beautiful lake. Can't wait to go back! This place is first class!

What a BnB should be! From the moment you drive across the bridge into town you quickly realize you’re in a very special place. That doesn’t stop when you are warmly greeted by Brielle and Matt- the energetic and friendly hosts. Brielle takes both the history of this BnB and breakfast very seriously to the delight of all you stay. My husband and I oooed and ahhhed over the details during our house tour before getting to our room that was unique and updated. The town and the house and the hosts are all you need for a perfect getaway. We were lucky enough to enjoy Porchfest while we were there and also got a great hike with waterfalls in during our stay. An easy stroll into town with great restaurants was a bonus too! Can’t wait to go back-well done!

Belva Lockwood Inn run by lovely couple Matt and Brie Brie is a breakfast artist. Delicious, nutritious and aesthetically beautiful breakfasts were prepared by Brie for us every morning. She took into account my allergy of walnuts and lactose. She custom designs breakfasts with your particular needs and love of foods in mind. The entire Inn is anchored in late 19th century history and is named after the first woman ever to run for president, Belva Lockwood. Her story is fascinating and so is the architecture of the inn. All rooms are beautiful, and our bed was very comfortable. Lovely quiet place to wind down after a long day of service to a relative with dementia. We'd return to the Inn in the evening, and I could feel the cares of the day just melt away. Big wrap around porch to enjoy in better weather. Looking forward to our next visit!

A Perfect B&B Experience Nothing more you could ask for in a bed and breakfast experience. A beautiful inn, excellent hosts, fun, delicious breakfast delivered in a picnic basket outside your door, snacks, coffee--and adult beverages--available to guests anytime. Beds, linens, etc. were all done right.

INN-CREDIBLE! Had an INN-CREDIBLE stay at the Belva Lockwood Inn! The owners Brie and Matt were extremely hospitable and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. They provided us with an excellent overview of the inn’s history and shared the story of the amazing Belva Lockwood. As a self-proclaimed germaphobe, I can say I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the rooms. We stayed in the spacious Gorman Suite and loved it. Comfy bed, large bathroom, and a cute sitting area. The breakfast each morning was delicious and beautifully served. Brie certainly has an eye for detail! The inn itself is located just minutes away from great local restaurants and shops. The owner, Brie, also set up a Finger Lakes wine and brewery tour for our party with Tia’s Wine Wagon and it was an awesome experience! We had a fantastic stay and can’t wait to go back to the charming Belva Lockwood Inn!
