A preservation in progress

The Belva Lockwood Inn

In 1815, Charles Pumpelly built a home and lived there until 1841 when he moved to his brother’s house located at the other end of Front Street in Owego.

The home was eventually converted to a boarding and day school for young ladies, The Owego Female Seminary.

In 1863 Belva Lockwood bought the property and was Principal of the Seminary until 1865. Belva sold the home and moved to Washington D.C. In 1879 she was the first woman to be admitted to the Supreme Court Bar. Belva went on to run for President of the United States in 1884 & 1888.

After Belva left, the original home was partially dismantled and moved to 188 Front Street, Owego and was used as a carriage house. In 1878, Jefferson Dwelle built this home which is considered one the finest examples of High Victorian architecture in the region.

The property later became home to the Fraternal Order of Eagles and then served as a private residence.

Each room at the Belva Lockwood Inn has been carefully designed to reflect the rich history of the property.  All adult guest suites are located on the second floor of the Inn.

An exceptional experience This was an exceptional experience that rivals any big chain 5 star hotel. Brie and Matt are gracious, friendly and attentive hosts, making you feel right at home. No detail is forgotten, from the adorable breakfast picnic baskets delivered to your door, beautifully appointed rooms, comfy and inviting big porch with river views. A full bar and snacks available on site. Located on the main street of the town of Owego makes it convenient to explore shops and restaurants. We will be sure to return on our next trip to the Binghamton University area.

Anniversary Warning, don't stay here. It will spoil every future bed and breakfast stay you'll ever have. The owners, Bree and Matt, couldn't be better. The house, perfect, historical, well furnished. The location wonderful. Corning glass, Tioga downs, Madison antique show.... One last bit of advice, visit before it's booked out a year in advance.

Absolutely perfect! Everything about our anniversary stay at the Belva Lockwood Inn was perfect. Within hours of making our reservation, the owner reached out via email to check on our arrival time & food restrictions/allergies. We were cheerfully greeted & made to feel welcome, and we were shown where we could find complimentary drinks & snacks. In the morning, a delightful picnic basket with breakfast was left at our door. The Belva Lockwood is a stunning property & we couldn't get over the attention to even the smallest details. The bar was fabulous & we loved our room (the Tioga). Owego is a beautiful (and very walkable) little town, and I recommend a visit if you get the chance. The locals and the owners of the inn are just as friendly and charming as the town itself....like stepping back in time. Go!

Wonderful get away The Belva Lockwood Inn was a wonderful place to stay. The history of the property and of the pioneer, Belva Lockwood, is impressive. Owego is a very nice small town with good food and shopping. It’s location was good for excursions to the finger lakes and other surrounding towns.

Amazing and Relaxing I was so impressed with the easy check in process and warm welcoming from the inn keepers, Matt and Brie. From arrival to departure it was a wonderful experience. The breakfast that Brie delivers to your room in a picnic basket each morning was such a surprise and so delicious. My friend and I couldn’t wait to see what would be in the basket each morning. Some of the goodies included fresh fruit, fresh baked scones, acacia bowls, and always a fresh pot of hot coffee. Truly so delightful. My favorite part of the stay was lounging on the large front porch, ( sipping some wine), and watching all the people walk by. Every person seemed to look our way and give us a nice greeting. It is obvious that Matt and Brie have gotten to know many of the residents since they even knew the names of their pets as they took an evening stroll. The inn itself is so beautiful. We stayed in the 2 room suite which I would highly recommend, but took a tour of some of the other rooms which are equally as beautiful but each has their own different decor and story behind it. My friend and I enjoyed ourselves so much we made another reservation in the fall and decided to include our husbands. There are so many vineyards near the inn that are beautiful as well. Most are right on one of the lakes. In the fall we plan to go hiking a little to nearby waterfalls. I saw pictures of several that are amazing and can’t wait to see them. If you didn’t want to venture out, the inn is located in the village of Oswego, so everything is so close. You can walk to stores, gift shops, cafes, and even a wine bar. We ate in town several times and enjoyed our meals. Before I finish, I must include 2 things. First, Brie knows so much about the history behind Belva Lockwood and is eager to share with her guests. It is very interesting. Second, I didn’t mention the view! From the front porch there is a beautiful view of the river directly across the street. So relaxing in the morning and evening to enjoy the breeze off the water and peaceful scenery. Can’t wait to go back.

Wonderful weekend at Belva Lockwood Inn in lovely Owego, NY The Belva Lockwood Inn is a remarkable place. The previous owners renovated a stately Victorian house, which was once a female seminary opened by Belva Lockwood--an attorney who is also the first U.S. woman to try a case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. Each room at the inn is spacious, comfortable, and has an en suite bathroom. And each room is wholly unique, decorated with a mix of period artwork and whimsy. The new innkeepers, Brie and Matt, are wonderful! They deliver a delicious basket of homemade pastry, yogurt, fruit and coffee to the room each morning. They host wine, beer, and other beverages--with a gorgeous assortment of antipasto items--every evening. The inn is a short walk from historic downtown Owego, one of the most charming locations in upstate New York, and it's across the street from the Susequehana River. Owego is close to Ithaca and the Finger Lakes, and New York's wine country. We'll be back!
